In a tragic incident, Suleiman Jika, a 19-year-old police cadet enrolled in a 100-level course at the Nigeria Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State, passed away after collapsing.
Suleiman Jika, originally from Adamawa State and a student in the Department of Computer Science, reportedly collapsed within the academy’s facilities during the early hours of Saturday, September 2, 2023.
According to reports from Punch, some of the cadets raised concerns about the Commandant, Assistant Inspector-General Sadiq Abubakar, alleging “high-handedness and financial mismanagement of feeding allowances meant for the students.”
A cadet, who requested anonymity to avoid potential repercussions, shared that they rushed the victim to the academy’s clinic. Unfortunately, they couldn’t provide timely medical attention due to the lack of essential medications and a medical officer in the unsuitable conditions, leading to his untimely demise.
Another cadet, also choosing to remain anonymous, pointed out the ongoing issue of a high influx of unwell cadets at the ill-equipped clinic on a regular basis.
This cadet further expressed concerns about the quality of food provided by the academy, citing that it had deteriorated since the new commandant took office. They emphasized that the deceased cadet, who was not even 20 years old, might have survived with proper care. The cadet also mentioned that the commandant had ordered the closure of essential services like the market and laundry and approved unnecessary training exercises during lecture hours.
The same cadet revealed that cadets often experienced exhaustion and frequent collapses during training due to insufficient nutrition and physical strain. Additionally, they claimed that threats from the commandant had forced cadets to participate in unwarranted training exercises, leading to the expulsion of many for falling ill.
Meanwhile, staff members who spoke to the publication expressed their grievances regarding the academy’s monthly feeding allowance.
