During the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), emphasized once again that his party possesses the necessary tools to effectively reshape Nigeria for the better.

Obi addressed the crowd in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, on Tuesday, during the inauguration of the campaign for Athan Achonu, the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in the state.

The former governor of Anambra State emphasized that his participation in the campaign launch, along with other distinguished members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, unequivocally signifies Athan Achonu as the sole authentic governorship contender for the Labour Party in the upcoming November 11 gubernatorial election in Imo State.

Speaking at the Kanu Nwanwko Sports Complex in Owerri, Obi addressed a crowd of enthusiastic party supporters.

Present at the event were not only Obi but also Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, the candidate Athan Achonu, and other prominent members of the party’s NEC.

Party leaders took their turns addressing the audience, emphasizing the importance of supporting the Labour Party in the upcoming state elections. They also addressed the controversies surrounding the true governorship candidate for the party in the forthcoming poll.

Obi reiterated his party’s readiness and capability to guide the nation and enact positive reforms. He earnestly appealed to the people of Imo to cast their votes for the Labour Party in the forthcoming election.

Achonu, speaking in the Igbo Language, outlined his vision for the state. He emphasized his commitment to addressing insecurity, generating employment opportunities for the youth, and granting autonomy to local governments, among other key initiatives, should he be elected as governor.

In the meantime, a gathering of passionate Labour Party youths and supporters congregated near the venue. They united their voices in rhythmic chants, accompanied by vibrant placards adorned with diverse inscriptions. Their collective expression was a manifestation of their concerns, centered around the legitimacy and candidacy of Achonu.

The question of who rightfully assumes the candidacy of the Labour Party for the upcoming November gubernatorial election in the state remains a subject of dispute within a competent court. As of the latest ruling by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, the contention revolves around the authenticity of the candidate. Allegations are made that Achonu is not the legitimate candidate, with claims that Ikechukwu Ukaegbu, who reportedly emerged as the victor in the party’s gubernatorial primary in the state, holds the genuine claim.

They are urging Obi to reconsider his stance in endorsing Achonu and instead adhere to the court’s directives.
