Manchester United and Mason Greenwood have come to a mutual agreement for the forward to depart from Old Trafford. This decision follows allegations of abuse that Greenwood has been facing. The club officially made this announcement on Monday.

The 21-year-old forward has been under suspension by the Premier League giants since January 30, 2022, following allegations concerning a young woman. Images and videos were posted online, although a criminal case was ultimately discontinued.

In February, prosecutors announced the dropping of charges against Greenwood, including attempted rape and sexual assault. This decision resulted from the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new evidence.

Nonetheless, Manchester United released an extensive statement on Monday, stating, “All parties involved, including Mason, acknowledge the challenges associated with his return to his football career at Manchester United. Consequently, it has been jointly decided that it would be most appropriate for him to resume his career away from Old Trafford. We will now collaborate with Mason to facilitate this outcome.”

Greenwood, whose contract extends until June 2025, stated, “I did not engage in the actions I was accused of, and in February, I was exonerated of all allegations.

“Nonetheless, I wholeheartedly acknowledge that I mishandled aspects of my relationship, and I assume my portion of accountability for the circumstances that culminated in the social media post.”

He remarked, “The conclusion reached today stems from a collective deliberation involving Manchester United, my family, and myself.”

“The optimal choice for the collective is that I pursue my football career elsewhere, distancing myself from Old Trafford. This move ensures that my presence won’t divert the club’s focus.

I express my gratitude to the organization for the unwavering support extended to me since I became a part of it at the age of seven. A portion of my heart will forever remain devoted to United.”
