In a fitting conclusion to what has been an exhilarating 2023 Leagues Cup campaign, Inter Miami, led by star player Lionel Messi, clinched victory over Nashville SC in a penalty shootout, securing their inaugural club trophy in the US.

The match kicked off with Nashville dominating possession and consistently pressuring Inter Miami, leaving them struggling to maintain control. However, in the 23rd minute, Messi once again demonstrated his brilliance. Seizing a loose ball, he skillfully evaded Walker Zimmerman and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.

As the second half commenced, Nashville intensified their offensive efforts, ultimately reaping rewards with a goal from Fafa Picault’s header that deflected off Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender and found the back of the net.

In the waning seconds, Leonardo Campana had a golden opportunity to seal the victory but narrowly missed, hitting the post with his last-ditch attempt. Consequently, both teams found themselves in a penalty shootout to determine the outcome.

The penalty shootout encompassed all 11 players from each team taking their turns at the spot, culminating with the goalkeepers as the final participants. Callender took the lead, launching his shot into the top of the frame with precision. Yet, Nashville’s Elliot Panicco’s attempt was thwarted by Callender, ultimately anointing Miami as the crowned Leagues Cup champions.

Following their triumphant acquisition of the trophy, David Beckham, one of Inter Miami’s part-owners, was visibly overjoyed, rushing forward to embrace Messi in celebration.
