Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has endorsed Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen as a potential winner of this year’s African Player of the Year award.
Gyan highlighted Osimhen’s exceptional performance in the previous season, suggesting that it places him ahead of other contenders for the award.
Aged 24, Osimhen showcased his prowess by netting 26 goals in 32 league matches for Napoli, a remarkable feat that contributed to Napoli’s victory as Serie A champions in the preceding season.
The most recent Nigerian recipient of the award was former Arsenal forward Kanu Nwankwo, who secured the accolade in 1999. Gyan expressed his belief that Osimhen is the rightful contender for the title of the best African player in 2023.
“In my opinion, he (Osimhen) is deserving of the honor. As a striker and considering his achievements, including Napoli’s league victory after more than three decades, he unquestionably merits the recognition,” Gyan conveyed during an interview with Brilla FM.
