On Sunday, Pastor Tunde Bakare, the Serving Overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, passionately called upon President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action against the rampant corruption that continues to plague our nation’s economy. His heartfelt plea aims to alleviate the hardships endured by Nigerians and bring about positive change.

Mr. President, while acknowledging the measures you have unveiled as palliatives, it is crucial to emphasize that these palliatives alone cannot effectively tackle the underlying issue,” Bakare passionately expressed during his “State of the Nation” address, broadcasted on a charged Sunday.

“Hence, we urge your focused attention on addressing the fundamental cause at the heart of this matter. It is imperative to liberate the less privileged from their burdens, pursue the ill-gotten gains, reclaim these resources, and realign them for the betterment of the Nigerian populace. In essence, Mr. President, the true target should be eradicating corruption, safeguarding the interests of Nigerians, rather than jeopardizing their well-being.”

Bakare’s remarks resonated with feelings shared throughout the nation, manifesting in a brief yet impactful nationwide protest and prolonged deliberations between organized labor and the Federal Government. These discussions ensued in response to escalated fuel prices resulting from subsidy removal and the increasing cost of living.

In response, Senator Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), raised doubts about Bakare’s authority to critique the President’s economic decisions.

Basiru quickly responded to Pastor Bakare’s comments, expressing his reservations about the Pastor’s stance. He noted, “While I don’t perceive Pastor Bakare as a politician, and I say this with all due respect, I find his statements questionable in terms of competence.”

He further elaborated, “Mentioning palliatives shouldn’t overshadow our commitment to rectifying the deep-rooted dysfunctions and imbalances within the economy. Our approach encompasses both addressing immediate relief through palliatives and tackling the underlying systemic issues.”
