The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) made a significant decision on Thursday by electing Abdullahi Ganduje, the former Kano State Governor, as the new National Chairman of the party.
The party’s NEC has recently made significant appointments, electing Ajibola Basiru, the former Senate spokesman from Osun State, as the National Secretary.
The elections took place today during the 12th NEC meeting held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
Following his successful election, Ganduje, the ex-Kano governor, expressed gratitude to the President and assured party leaders that internal democracy would be a top priority during his tenure.
Ganduje also pledged to implement a scientific register of party members and emphasized his commitment to effective election management and conflict resolution.
According to him, he promised a level playing field for all party members during party primaries. Ganduje assured that he would hit the ground running to ensure victory for the party in all forthcoming governorship elections across the country.
The NEC meeting was graced by notable figures including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, and chieftains of the party in the National Assembly, among others.
In his address to the 12th NEC of the party, the President stated that the APC had already secured victories in previous elections, and now it is time to deliver on the promises of good governance to the Nigerian people.
The President emphatically declared that the 2023 elections were the finest in Nigeria’s history.
Notably absent at the NEC meeting were ex-President Muhammadu Buhari and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. However, the first National Chairman of the party, Bisi Akande, was in attendance.
The NEC meeting took place following Wednesday’s session of the APC national caucus.
In mid-July, the party experienced the resignations of two members of the National Working Committee (NWC). Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore stepped down from their positions as the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively.
