Everything is now in place for the screening of the initial batch of ministerial nominees sent to the Senate by President Bola Tinubu.

A list of 28 ministerial nominees selected from 25 States of the Federation was submitted to the Senate last week.

The Senate is presently holding a special plenary session dedicated to the screening exercise on Monday afternoon.

According to Section 147 (3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the President must appoint at least one minister from each of the 36 states. However, it is important to note that 11 states – Adamawa, Bayelsa, Gombe, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Lagos, Osun, Yobe, Plateau, and Zamfara — as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) do not have ministerial nominees at this time.

President Tinubu, in his letter to the Senate last week titled, ‘Request For Confirmation Of Ministerial-Nominees’, has assured that a supplementary ministerial list will be sent to the Red Chamber in due course.

The Senate’s special sitting, which began after noon, is currently addressing another matter of national importance – the planned strike action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the fuel subsidy removal and its impact on Nigerian workers. However, the screening of ministerial nominees is expected to commence shortly thereafter.
