Police were called to the beach around 10.15am this morning, June 7, after people spotted the woman struggling in the water.
The Southend-on-Sea Coastguard, police, and paramedic teams were dispatched to Chalkwell beach immediately.
Unfortunately, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Essex Police confirmed in a statement: “We arrived and sadly found a woman had died. We will issue a further update when we can.”
Pictures show several police cars parked up by the beach, with dozens of people on the sand. An air ambulance was also spotted circling overhead.

A Coastguard spokesperson added: “A 999 call was received at 10.10am today [June 7] following an incident at Chalkwell Beach.
“The Southend Coastguard Rescue Team, Southend RNLI lifeboat, Essex Police and the East of England Ambulance Service attended.”
